ACH, SWIFT and Fedwire are not interchangeable labels. ACH is a US electronic payments network, Fedwire Funds Service is a real-time gross settlement service, and Swift provides secure financial messaging; the usable route still depends on the account and service arrangement.
Decision criterion 1 — Destination and counterparty
Start with where the receiving institution is located, which currency is being sent and what instructions the beneficiary supplied. A domestic US payment need and a cross-border correspondent payment need are different operating problems.
Decision criterion 2 — Timing and finality
Ask for the provider’s actual processing window, cut-off, expected status updates and return process. Do not turn general network characteristics into a promise for a specific account. Urgent or high-value does not automatically mean one route is available or appropriate.
Decision criterion 3 — Data and reconciliation
Compare the reference fields, remittance information, transaction identifiers and statement output that the service arrangement exposes. The best route is the one that meets the payment obligation and leaves enough evidence for reconciliation and exception handling.
Decision criterion 4 — Cost and controls
Confirm the fee schedule, approval controls, limits, amendment process and return handling with the relevant institution. Do not assume a generic fee advantage: pricing varies by provider, account, product and transaction.
When each option may be unsuitable
A route is unsuitable when the destination cannot receive it, the account does not support it, the timing does not meet the obligation, the required payment information cannot be carried or the control process is inadequate. Document the reason rather than choosing solely on familiarity.

Scope and limitations
DogPay is the digital finance and payment infrastructure platform. The relevant financial institution provides and independently approves each business account; its opening documents determine the account type, holder and terms. Availability is not universal. Actual currencies, payment routes and functions depend on the institution, account, product and jurisdiction. Account approval, payment acceptance, fees, exchange rates, speed, coverage and business outcomes are not guaranteed. Confirm current network rules and account-specific execution details before instructing a payment.
